From Acharya Hardin:
Relaxation and Realization:
The Three Courts
As we exert ourselves on the path of awakening, realization ultimately depends on our ability to relax. For many reasons, people in the world today do not feel safe, and therefore can’t relax. We might say, “I’d like to go home and relax,” because at home we can feel a sense of possession and safety. For the vajrayana practitioner, that “home” is the trikaya mandala principle, expressed in the Shambhala terma as the three courts. The three courts accommodate our completeness, the totality of basic goodness. During this city retreat, we will explore the relationship between the three courts, relaxation, and realization.
Note: On Saturday, March 10th, all meditation instructors, assistant directors, and Shambhala guides will watch the Sakyong’s Meditation Instructor address within the context of our retreat. Participants in the retreat that are not MIs, ADs and Guides will have the opportunity to continue their practice during this time.
If you would like to do some preparation beforehand, the most important thing to study is the “Three Courts,” talk 3 in the 1978 Kalapa Assembly. If you would like to work on your memorization, it would provide a good ground to memorize the nature and the three qualities of the inhabitants of each court. You might also review in Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior, Chapters 10, 11, and 12 on “Nowness,” “Discovering Magic,” and “How to Invoke Magic.” This is recommended, but in no way required. If you do not have time to review this material, please come along anyway.
