The Japanese archery practice of Kyudo is a dharma art that has been entwined with Shambhala for decades, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche recognizing and encouraging Kyudo practice from the earliest years of Shambhala. To teach it, he turned to Kanjuro Shibata XX, the noted sensei who had transplanted Japan’s spiritual school of Kyudo to America.

Sempai Toby Bernal is a student and close associate of Kanjuro Shibata XXI, Sensei, the son of Kanjuro Shibata XX, and the current leader of this school of Kyudo. Toby is himself a Shambhala practitioner in Austin, where he leads one of the few recognized American dojos in the tradition established by Kanjuro Shibata XX.  Sempai Toby has taught numerous classes in Houston and Seattle and has attended workshops with Kanjuro Shibata XXI in Japan and in retreats in the US.

Since the Early 1600’s Heke Ryu Kyudo has been used to search the inner mind for obstacles that cloud the vision of our inherent dignity.  Kyudo as sport has taken over the once numerous schools that have taught this meditation, and sadly only a few schools remain in the world to this day.

In this weekend class we will explore our physical and mental blocks with insight and patience.  Students will engage in Japanese culture, language and Budo culture each day and discover how to bring that knowledge into everyday life.

All equipment will be provided.

*Due to the size of the equipment, students under 12 are not permitted to enroll*
